
Sports for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities
Area 27 Special Olympics offers a variety of intellectual disabilities sports programming options for individuals ages 8 and up who live in Fauquier County. Athletes come from many different backgrounds and ability levels and are welcomed by coaches and volunteers who meet them where they are to build skills and community.
To participate follow these easy steps:

Fall and Winter/ Sunday afternoons
Held at Fauquier High School, the Area 27 Special Olympics basketball program develops teamwork, coordination, and sportsmanship, through skill-building drills and competitive game play. Athletes learn passing, shooting, dribbling, and defensive strategies while building confidence on and off the court. Contact Coach Nina to participate.
Bocce
Fall/ Sunday mornings
Utilizing the Liberty High bocce courts, bocce is a fun and accessible target sport that emphasizes precision, focus, and strategy. Athletes of all ability levels can participate while improving hand-eye coordination and enjoying social competition. Contact Coach Lauren to participate.


Bowling
Winter and Spring/ Monday evenings
An athlete favorite, bowling helps individuals enhance balance, concentration, and motor skills in an inclusive and supportive environment. Participants practice at Galaxy Strikes bowling alley in Warrenton and have opportunities to compete individually as well as part of a team. Contact Coach Molly to participate.
Pickleball
Spring/ Saturday mornings
Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis into an easy-to-learn, fun-for-all sport. Athletes practice at the Vint Hill Community Center and work on improving agility, hand-eye coordination, and strategic thinking while competing in singles or doubles matches. Swimming
Spring and Summer/ Saturday mornings and Thursday evenings
Swimming offers individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop endurance, strength, and water safety skills. Fauquier Special Olympics offers a variety of levels from skilled to expert, offering participants a chance to build confidence while improving their overall fitness and technique. Now enrolling! Track and Field
Spring and Summer/ Sunday mornings
Athletes who participate in track and field have the opportunity to practice and compete in a variety of events, including running, jumping, and throwing. Participants build physical fitness, determination, and friendships through this program which is held at Liberty High School. Contact Coach Lauren to participate.

Volleyball
Fall/ Sunday afternoons
Held at Fauquier High School, volleyball promotes teamwork, communication, and physical fitness through serving, passing, setting, and game play. Athletes build coordination and camaraderie while enjoying a fast-paced team sport. Contact Coach George to participate.
